Apply, apply apply! Even if you don’t feel like you’re ready, the more you apply the more likely you are to get a fellowship and the more practice you’ll have for fellowship and grant writing in the future. Here, I discuss my process and thoughts about applying to the NSF GRFP and DOE CSGF in the 2025/2026 cycle.

In my last post, I mentioned in the “Unconventional Advice” section that I had applied to a lot of summer programs. In all, I applied to 45 of these programs while in undergrad and was fortunate enough to get into several every summer. In this post, I will walk through what summer research entails, how to apply, programs for American students, and more! In the spirit of full transparency, I’ve also included my application materials for all the programs I got into, so you can see how my skills as a writer and researcher developed over time and hopefully use it as a guide for your own applications.

Hello! I’ve been excited to write this post ever since I completed the PhD application cycle in Spring 2025. When I was applying to graduate school last year, I read countless blog posts and I’ve been eager to give back to the grad application community by blogging about my own experience. My hope is that by sharing my experience with the PhD application process for neuroscience & psychology, I can help you understand what the process looks and feels like and to help you know what to expect, as I know it can seem overwhelming!
